The Senate bar starts from the 85 seats not on the ballot this year or rated Solid by Cook: 43 Democratic (including independents Angus King and Bernie Sanders, who caucus with Democrats) and 42 Republican. The 15 key races are added as they are called. Republicans keep control at 50 seats because Vice President Vance breaks ties; Democrats need 51. Dan Osborn (Nebraska) is an independent and is counted as Other if he wins.
The House bar starts from the seats Cook rates Solid for each party, which are assumed, not counted; the House races here are added as they are called. Hatched segments are uncalled races where a party leads with at least 60% of the expected vote counted. They show where the count is heading and never count toward control.
Last margin: the winning party's lead over the runner-up in the seat's most recent general election (2024 for House seats; the year is shown for Senate seats). "District redrawn" means the seat's lines changed for 2026, so its last margin is from the old district.
Results: official state results sites first, then AP and Decision Desk HQ calls as reported. North Carolina, Minnesota and Washington numbers come straight from official state results files every few minutes on election night; other races update about every 15 minutes until 3am ET (House races about every 7 minutes), then every 30 minutes until 5am and every 3 hours through Nov. 6. Each race shows when its numbers were last updated. Alaska counts ranked-choice ballots after Election Day.
